Dental Implants in Edinburgh: What the Process Involves and Why Cherrybank Dental Spa Is the Right Place to Start

Dental Implants in Edinburgh: What the Process Involves and Why Cherrybank Dental Spa Is the Right Place to Start

Dental implants are the most permanent and natural-feeling solution available for replacing a missing tooth, and for patients who are suitable they are almost always the first recommendation. But the process is more involved than most people expect when they first start researching, and the quality of the result depends enormously on the skill and experience of the team delivering it.

Cherrybank Dental Spa is based on Hanover Street in Edinburgh city centre and has built a reputation as one of Edinburgh’s leading private dental practices. With a 4.8-star rating across 418 Google reviews, award recognition at the 2025 Dental Awards, and a team committed to pain-free dentistry at every stage, it is a practice where the standard of care is reflected in what patients say about their experience time and again.

Why Choose Cherrybank Dental Spa for Dental Implants in Edinburgh?

Choosing the right provider for implant treatment is one of the most significant dental decisions you will make. Experience, technology, and the quality of care throughout the process all affect the outcome.

At Cherrybank Dental Spa, implant treatment is delivered using laser-assisted techniques and comes with a lifetime warranty, giving patients an additional layer of assurance that is not standard across the industry. The practice also backs its pain-free promise with a money-back guarantee: if you feel pain during treatment, your money is refunded. That level of confidence in the patient experience is rare.

Patients describe the practice consistently as welcoming, transparent, and thorough. One patient who completed a full implant journey wrote: “I have struggled with problems with this specific tooth since I damaged it at 13 years old and have spent nearly a lifetime going to different dentists. Now, with only a few visits to Cherrybank, it’s fixed forever. They break things up and manage the whole process as professionally and painlessly as possible.” Another writes: “After decades of hiding my smile I can finally not hide it anymore. The care and support I received was exceptional. I cannot express how grateful I am to their care, understanding and dedication.”

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed surgically into the jawbone where a tooth root used to be. Over several months, the bone grows around and fuses with the post in a process called osseointegration. Once that bond is confirmed, a custom-made crown is attached on top.

The result is a replacement tooth anchored directly into the jaw. It does not move, does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, and requires no special maintenance beyond normal brushing and flossing. Most patients describe the finished result as completely indistinguishable from their natural teeth.

Why Implants Are the Gold Standard for Missing Teeth

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone at that site begins to lose density. A natural root transmits biting forces into the bone every time you eat, and without that stimulation the bone slowly resorbs. Over time this affects the shape of the jaw, the stability of neighbouring teeth, and in cases of multiple missing teeth, the appearance of the face.

Dentures and bridges replace the visible tooth but do nothing to prevent this bone loss. An implant is the only tooth replacement that replicates the function of a root, stimulating the bone and maintaining the structure that would otherwise be lost.

Beyond bone preservation, implants offer a level of stability and natural function that other restorations cannot match. With proper care, they are designed to last a lifetime.

Who Is Suitable for Dental Implants in Edinburgh?

Most healthy adults who are missing one or more teeth are potentially suitable for implants. The key requirements are sufficient bone volume at the implant site, healthy gums, and good general health to support healing after a minor surgical procedure.

Patients who have had a missing tooth for some time may have experienced bone loss at the site. In many cases this can be addressed with bone grafting before or at the time of implant placement.

Active gum disease needs to be treated and stable before an implant is placed. Uncontrolled gum disease around an implant is one of the main causes of failure, so this is always addressed first.

Smoking increases implant failure rates and your dentist will discuss this honestly with you at your consultation. Medical conditions that affect healing require individual assessment.

The only reliable way to know whether implants are right for your situation is a thorough clinical assessment. At Cherrybank Dental Spa, that process begins with a complimentary consultation with Smile Advisor Tammy, who will talk you through your options with no commitment and no pressure.

The Dental Implant Process at Cherrybank Dental Spa

Your Complimentary Consultation

Your first step is a complimentary consultation with Tammy at Cherrybank Dental Spa. This is not a clinical appointment, it is a conversation to understand what you want to achieve, talk through your options, and decide whether you want to move forward to a full clinical assessment. From the moment you walk in, the practice makes every effort to put you at ease coats are taken, water and refreshments are offered, and the focus is entirely on you.

Clinical Assessment and Planning

Your dentist will carry out a full examination including digital X-rays and 3D imaging to assess bone volume and anatomy at the implant site. A detailed treatment plan is built from this assessment, covering every stage, the full timeline, and a complete breakdown of costs before anything moves forward. Written quotations are provided as standard.

Any Preparatory Treatment

If the tooth is still present it is extracted first. If bone grafting is needed it takes place at this stage and is given time to heal before implant placement. Not every patient requires preparatory work, but when it is needed it is the foundation for a lasting result.

Laser-Assisted Implant Placement

Cherrybank Dental Spa uses laser-assisted implant techniques, which allows for a more precise and minimally invasive placement than conventional surgery. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic with the practice’s five-step pain-free protocol: numbing gel applied first, warmed anaesthetic, the finest and shortest needles, a slow injection rate, and a computer-assisted delivery system. Most patients are surprised at how comfortable the experience is.

Healing and Osseointegration

The implant is left to fuse with the bone over three to six months. Check-up appointments monitor progress during this period but there is no active treatment. A temporary restoration keeps the gap closed while healing takes place.

Your Crown

Once osseointegration is confirmed, a digital scan or impressions are taken to fabricate your custom crown. The crown is matched to the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. When it is fitted, the implant is complete and fully functional.

Laser-Assisted Implants With a Lifetime Warranty

One of the things that sets Cherrybank Dental Spa apart from most dental practices in Edinburgh is the offer of a lifetime warranty on dental implant treatment. This reflects the practice’s confidence in both the techniques used and the long-term outcomes achieved for patients.

The laser-assisted approach supports precision placement and a more comfortable healing process, and the warranty gives patients the assurance that their investment is protected over the long term.

Full Mouth Dental Implants in Edinburgh

For patients who are missing multiple teeth or who require a full arch restoration, Cherrybank Dental Spa offers comprehensive full mouth implant solutions including implant-supported dentures and same-day teeth on implants.

These treatments are planned with the same thoroughness and delivered with the same care as single tooth replacements, but they involve a more extended treatment sequence and a higher investment. A full assessment and treatment plan will give you a clear picture of what is involved and what the cost looks like before any decisions are made.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

With proper care, the implant post is designed to last a lifetime. The crown may need replacing after 15 to 20 years depending on wear, but the implant itself rarely requires intervention once it has successfully integrated.

Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups are the main requirements for long-term success. The team at Cherrybank Dental Spa supports patients in maintaining the health of both their implants and their natural teeth at every routine appointment.

Dental Implant Costs and Finance Options in Edinburgh

The cost of a dental implant depends on how many are being placed, whether preparatory work is needed, and the type of crown used. A complete breakdown of costs is provided before any commitment is made — this is one of the practice’s four written guarantees.

Cherrybank Dental Spa offers flexible monthly payment options to help spread the investment. Finance options are discussed at your complimentary consultation so you have a clear picture of your monthly commitment alongside the full treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dental implants painful in Edinburgh?

At Cherrybank Dental Spa, pain-free treatment is a guarantee backed by a money-back promise. The implant placement is carried out using a five-step pain-free protocol and laser-assisted techniques for a more comfortable experience. Post-procedure discomfort is typically mild and easily managed. If you feel pain during any treatment at the practice, your money is refunded.

What makes laser-assisted implants different?

Laser-assisted implant placement allows for greater precision and a less invasive surgical approach than conventional techniques. This supports a more comfortable procedure and can contribute to a smoother healing process. Cherrybank Dental Spa also backs its implant treatment with a lifetime warranty.

How long does the dental implant process take in Edinburgh?

From consultation to fitted crown, most single-tooth cases take between six and twelve months. The majority of that time is the osseointegration phase rather than active appointments. Cases requiring bone grafting take a little longer but the final result is the same.

Can I get dental implants if I have had a missing tooth for several years?

In most cases yes, though bone loss at the site may mean grafting is needed before placement. Your dentist will assess bone volume with imaging at your consultation and advise clearly on what is involved. Acting sooner is always simpler, but patients who have had a gap for years are frequently still suitable for treatment.

Does Cherrybank Dental Spa offer finance for dental implants?

Yes. Monthly payment options are available to help spread the cost of implant treatment. Finance is discussed at your complimentary consultation so you know your full monthly commitment before agreeing to anything.

Are dental implants available on the NHS in Edinburgh?

NHS provision for dental implants is very limited and typically restricted to specific clinical criteria. In most cases implants are provided privately. Cherrybank Dental Spa offers monthly payment options to help make the investment manageable.

What happens if I do not replace a missing tooth?

Leaving a gap leads to gradual bone loss at the site, drifting of neighbouring teeth, and changes to your bite over time. These effects compound and make future treatment more complex. Replacing a missing tooth promptly is considerably simpler and more cost-effective than addressing the secondary problems that develop if the gap is left untreated.

What Treatments Are Included in a Smile Makeover in Edinburgh?

What Treatments Are Included in a Smile Makeover in Edinburgh?

Smile design Edinburgh at Cherrybank Dental Spa is a collaborative process that starts with listening to what you want and builds a treatment plan around your specific goals. The treatments included in a smile makeover vary from patient to patient because no two smiles, no two concerns and no two sets of goals are exactly the same. This guide walks you through the treatments most commonly included in a smile makeover so you can approach your consultation with a clear understanding of what might be part of your plan.

The Planning Stage: Smile Design Before Treatment Begins

Before any treatment starts, a well-planned smile makeover begins with a thorough design stage. At Cherrybank Dental Spa, we use digital smile design tools to help you visualise your potential result before any clinical work begins. Photographs and digital scans are used to create a preview of the proposed outcome, giving you a clear and realistic picture of what is achievable and ensuring your expectations are aligned with the plan.

This planning stage is one of the most important parts of the process. A smile makeover built on thorough design planning delivers a more predictable, more satisfying result than one that begins treatment without a clear aesthetic vision. Visit our smile makeover page to learn more about our approach to smile design in Edinburgh.

Teeth Whitening: Establishing the Base Colour

Professional teeth whitening is frequently the first stage of a smile makeover. By brightening the natural teeth before any other treatments are placed, it establishes the colour baseline that veneers, bonding or crowns will be matched to. This ensures a consistent, natural-looking result across all treated and untreated teeth.

Whitening is also one of the most cost-effective improvements available and can make a significant difference on its own for patients whose primary concern is discolouration rather than shape or size. For these patients, whitening may be the only treatment needed.

Porcelain Veneers: Transforming Shape, Colour and Size

Porcelain veneers are the most powerful tool in smile design for patients who want to change the colour, shape, size and surface texture of the front teeth simultaneously. Ultra-thin shells of ceramic material are bonded permanently to the prepared tooth surface and reflect light in a way that closely mimics natural enamel.

Veneers can address permanent discolouration that does not respond to whitening, chips and wear, small gaps, teeth that are uneven in size or slightly misaligned and teeth that are too short or poorly proportioned. When well-designed and well-made, porcelain veneers are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Composite Bonding: Conservative and Immediate

Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin shaped and hardened directly on the tooth to repair chips, fill gaps and improve the contour and appearance of the front teeth. It is one of the most conservative cosmetic options because it requires little or no preparation of the natural tooth surface.

Bonding can be completed in a single appointment and makes an immediate, significant visual difference. For patients who want a meaningful improvement without the commitment of porcelain veneers, or who want to preview the look before investing in a permanent solution, composite bonding is an excellent starting point.

Gum Contouring: Reshaping the Frame of the Smile

The proportion and symmetry of the gumline has a profound effect on how the teeth look. A gumline that is uneven, too high or too low can make otherwise healthy teeth appear irregular or poorly proportioned. Laser gum contouring reshapes the gumline with precision and minimal discomfort, creating a more balanced frame that enhances the appearance of the teeth beneath it.

Gum contouring is often included in a smile makeover as a finishing step, carried out after any other treatments so that the final gumline is designed around the completed smile rather than the starting point.

Teeth Straightening as Part of Smile Design in Edinburgh

For patients whose smile concerns include misalignment or crowding, a short course of orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign may be recommended before cosmetic finishing treatments are placed. Straightening the teeth first means veneers or bonding sit on teeth that are already in the correct position, which reduces the amount of material needed and creates a more natural result.

This sequencing also means fewer teeth need to be treated with veneers because alignment concerns have been addressed orthodontically rather than cosmetically, which is a more conservative and clinically appropriate approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need all of these treatments as part of my smile design Edinburgh?

No. Your smile makeover plan will only include the treatments that are relevant to your specific concerns and goals. Your dentist will recommend the most efficient combination of treatments to achieve your desired result rather than applying a standard package. Some patients need only whitening. Others need a more comprehensive plan. The consultation is where this is established.

How do I know what my smile design in Edinburgh will look like before treatment?

At Cherrybank Dental Spa we use digital smile design tools to create a visualisation of your potential result before any treatment begins. This gives you a realistic preview and ensures your expectations are aligned with what is achievable before you commit to treatment.

How long does a full smile makeover take in Edinburgh?

This depends entirely on the treatments involved. Whitening and composite bonding can be completed in two to three appointments over a few weeks. A plan including porcelain veneers takes four to six appointments over four to eight weeks, allowing time for laboratory fabrication. Your dentist will give you a specific timeline at your consultation.

Teeth Whitening in Edinburgh: A Safe Way to Brighten Your Smile

Teeth Whitening in Edinburgh: A Safe Way to Brighten Your Smile

Your Smile Says More Than You Think

First impressions matter, and your smile is often one of the very first things people notice about you. Yet for many people in Edinburgh, the smile they present to the world does not quite reflect how they feel on the inside. Teeth that have become stained or discoloured over the years can affect confidence in ways that go well beyond appearance, influencing how comfortable people feel in social situations, in professional settings, and simply when catching a glimpse of themselves in a mirror.

The good news is that professional teeth whitening is one of the most straightforward and effective cosmetic dental treatments available, and it produces results that make a genuinely noticeable difference without altering the natural structure of your teeth.

At Cherrybank Dental Spa in Edinburgh, professional whitening treatments are carried out safely and under clinical supervision, giving patients a brighter smile they can feel good about. This guide explains how teeth become discoloured, how professional whitening works, and what you can do to maintain your results.

Patients can learn more about teeth whitening and other treatments available at Cherrybank Dental Spa by visiting the Cherrybank Dental Spa website.

Why Teeth Become Discoloured

Tooth discolouration is extremely common and affects patients of all ages. It develops gradually, which means many people do not notice the change until they compare a recent photograph with one from a few years earlier.

The most common causes of tooth staining include:

  • Coffee, tea, and red wine, which contain pigments that bind to tooth enamel over time
  • Dark-coloured foods such as berries, soy sauce, and tomato-based sauces
  • Smoking and tobacco use, which cause surface staining and deeper discolouration
  • Natural ageing, as the outer enamel layer gradually thins and the darker dentine beneath becomes more visible
  • Certain medications, which can affect tooth colour from within

It is worth noting that even patients with excellent oral hygiene are not immune to discolouration. Many of the causes listed above affect the teeth regardless of how diligently you brush and floss, which is why professional whitening remains relevant and popular even among patients with good overall oral health.

How Professional Teeth Whitening Works

Professional whitening treatments use specially formulated gels that work by breaking down the compounds responsible for staining within and on the surface of the enamel. Unlike over-the-counter whitening products, which tend to use lower concentrations of active ingredients and produce more modest results, professional treatments are clinically supervised and calibrated to deliver consistent, meaningful improvement safely.

At Cherrybank Dental Spa, the whitening process typically involves:

  • An initial dental consultation to assess your teeth and confirm whitening is appropriate
  • Custom-made whitening trays designed to fit your teeth precisely
  • Professional-grade whitening gel provided for use with the trays
  • A gradual whitening process carried out over several days or weeks at home

The custom-made trays are an important part of what makes professional whitening more effective than generic alternatives. Because they fit your teeth precisely, the gel makes full and even contact with every tooth surface, producing consistent results across the whole smile rather than patchy brightening in some areas and not others.

Is Professional Whitening Right for You?

Professional teeth whitening is suitable for a wide range of adults who are unhappy with the colour of their teeth. It is particularly effective for staining caused by food, drinks, smoking, and the natural ageing process.

Patients who tend to benefit most include those who:

  • Have noticed their teeth yellowing or darkening over time
  • Have staining from tea, coffee, red wine, or tobacco
  • Would like a brighter smile for a specific occasion such as a wedding or special event
  • Want to improve their confidence when smiling or speaking

A consultation at Cherrybank Dental Spa in Edinburgh is the most reliable way to determine whether whitening is appropriate for your specific situation. Some types of discolouration, such as staining caused by certain medications or changes within the tooth itself, respond differently to whitening treatment, and your dentist will advise on the most suitable approach based on what they find during your examination.

Maintaining Your Results

Professional whitening produces results that can last for many months, and with the right habits in place those results can be extended further. The longevity of your whitening results depends largely on the lifestyle factors that contributed to staining in the first place, so making a few simple adjustments after treatment can make a meaningful difference.

Helpful habits for maintaining a brighter smile include:

  • Brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Attending regular dental check-ups at Cherrybank Dental Spa
  • Reducing the frequency of staining foods and drinks where possible
  • Using a straw for drinks such as coffee, tea, and red wine to reduce direct contact with the teeth
  • Avoiding tobacco products, which cause both surface and deeper staining

Top-up whitening treatments can also be arranged when needed to refresh results over time. Your dentist at Cherrybank Dental Spa will advise on the appropriate timing based on your individual situation.

Teeth Whitening in Edinburgh Frequently Asked Questions

Is professional teeth whitening safe?

Yes. Professional whitening treatments carried out under dental supervision are considered safe for the vast majority of patients. The key distinction between professional and over-the-counter products is the clinical oversight involved, which ensures the treatment is appropriate for your teeth and carried out in a way that minimises the risk of sensitivity or gum irritation.

How long do whitening results last?

Results vary between patients depending on lifestyle and dietary habits, but many patients in Edinburgh maintain noticeably brighter teeth for several months following treatment. Avoiding the main staining culprits and attending regular check-ups helps extend results further.

Does whitening damage tooth enamel?

When carried out correctly using professional-grade products and under dental supervision, whitening does not damage tooth enamel. Over-whitening or the misuse of high-concentration products without clinical guidance carries more risk, which is one of the reasons professional treatment is always recommended over unsupervised alternatives.

Will whitening work on all types of staining?

Whitening is most effective for extrinsic staining caused by food, drinks, and ageing. Certain types of discolouration, including staining from some medications or changes that originate within the tooth, may not respond in the same way. A consultation at Cherrybank Dental Spa will establish what is causing your discolouration and what results are realistically achievable.

Can I whiten my teeth if I have sensitive teeth?

Many patients with sensitive teeth are still suitable for professional whitening. At Cherrybank Dental Spa, treatment can be tailored to accommodate sensitivity, including adjustments to the gel concentration and the frequency of wear. Your dentist will discuss the most comfortable and effective approach for your situation during your consultation.

Ready for a Brighter Smile?

At Cherrybank Dental Spa, we provide personalised teeth straightening tailored to your lifestyle, goals and oral health needs.

Why Straight Teeth Matter

Straight teeth are not only about appearance. Misalignment can make brushing and flossing more difficult, increase the risk of gum disease, cause uneven enamel wear and place strain on the jaw. Correct alignment supports better oral hygiene, improved bite balance and long term stability.

Modern Teeth Straightening in Edinburgh

Orthodontic treatment in 2026 benefits from digital scanning and precise planning. We use advanced technology to create detailed 3D images of your teeth, allowing us to plan movement accurately and explain each stage clearly. Many patients appreciate seeing a visual projection of their expected results before treatment begins.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are transparent, custom made trays that gradually guide your teeth into position. They are removable for meals and cleaning, making them suitable for busy lifestyles. Aligners are popular among adults seeking a subtle and flexible treatment option.

Fixed Braces

For more complex alignment concerns, fixed braces may provide the control needed to achieve optimal results. Modern systems are smaller and more comfortable than traditional braces, offering reliable outcomes with improved aesthetics.

Your journey begins with a comprehensive assessment at Cherrybank Dental Spa. We will examine your teeth and bite, take digital scans and discuss your goals. You will receive a personalised treatment plan outlining expected timelines, appointments and costs. I had an amazing experience at Cherrybank Dental Spa.First, the office itself is very nice and has a warm cosy feel to it.Second, Rami the dentist, was very welcoming, professional and helpful. He and his assistant Olivia, quickly and efficiently gave me a full dental examination along with X-Rays and 3D imaging scans. After the 3D imaging was complete Rami was able to show me my teeth and where they needed to be cleaned, specifically for me.Rami went above and beyond during my examination, even doing a minor retainer repair and a quick cleaning and descaling around the retainer area where he was doing the repair.I would absolutely recommend anyone to go to Cherrybank dental and see Rami, he was thorough, helpful and very personable. All the staff were very friendly and the overall vibe of the place was amazing.
